What Battlefield game should I get?

I'm trying to get a good game to hold me off until my swbf mod requests are finished, and I already decided on the battlefeild series. Scince there are twenty million battlefeild games availible, which one should I get?
I tried battlefeild 2 from family video, but it was for playstation 2, and so naturally, it was too hard to play.
Battlefeild 2142 looks awesome, but I am put off by the lack of an offline instant action/ story mode.
Battlefeild 1942 seems like it might be cool, but it is the gazillionth-billionth ww2 fps released so far.
I don't hear much about Battlefeild: veitnam.
So, pros? cons? opinions? Which one should I get?

2142 is a great game to get, if you feel you dont want 2142 go for 2. 2 is very realistic, it is a great game also, though my first choice is 2142!

Of them I would recommend
Battlefield 2142. However because peoples tastes vary I would recommend you check out the
EA Battlefield website and see which version you think is best for you.
With the price of games being what they are today, I would recommend to everyone that they thoroughly investigate and play demos (if possible) of any potential game. More "bang" for your buck!

I think I've decided on Battlefeild 2142, but is it online-only?

No, there is offline play also, but it hasn't got as many maps as online. Well, it has all the maps, but not in all the sizes, and titan is online only. But there are mods being made for it adding the missing maps back in. My choice would be 2142 as well. Great game IMO.

So it has an instant action and a campaign?

The minimod that enables you to play
all maps in all sizes in single player is mentioned in my "
I wanna play it in Singleplayer" thread (for those who missed it).

How is the 1942 online community now a days? I would have thought everyone has 2 or 2142.

Battlefield 2 is a great game too, if you want to mod, go with BF2 not BF2142 because of the lack of tools....

Surprisingly enough, I actually have all of them (though not all of the expansion packs for each game.)
1942 was the first in the series, and while it is a good game (still holds up nowadays), it IS dated, and compared to some of the new titles, it just isn't "IT" anymore. What has kept the 1942 community going for so long is the mod community. If you plan on picking it up, download the "Desert Combat" mod for 1942 - you won't be disappointed - it is one of the best made mods for this game out there - using modern weapons, modern maps (as well as some of the original maps for 1942 with the new weapons etc).
Battlefield Vietnam... although I have it, and used to play it extensively, this is the ONLY game in the series that just hasn't "taken off". The online community isn't there, and never really was in the first place. There are probably more people playing 1942 than there are playing Vietnam. The graphics have been updated, the gameplay is tweaked (slightly), and there is a neat feature in BF:Vietnam that allows you to add your own music to play when in vehicles and aircraft. This game just never saw its potential, and the mod community for 1942 kept it ahead in terms of players over Vietnam.
Battlefield 2 - what can I say? This game is awesome. I have the original games, and the Special forces expansion pack for it. BF2 (battlefield 2 not BattleFRONT 2) has a HUGE online community, and was the first in the series to offer online persistence. This means that the more you play online, the higher your rank can go, and with every increase in rank, you get an unlockable weapon to be used in online games. BF 2 has far more players playing it than 2142 does - more due to the fact that many people see 2142 almost as if it were a mod for battlefield 2, and not a completely new game. Battlefield 2 has many maps, many vehicles, and unlockable content - as well as an online leaderboard system that tracks your rank and statistics. Now that 2142 is out, BF 2 can be had for $24 Canadian WITH it's Special Forces Expansion pack. Truth be tols, there are SO many players playing the original Battlefield 2, that I RARELY if ever play the Special forces expansion - that's how good it is, and there is never a lack of games to be found.
Battlefield 2142. Good solid game based on the Battlefield 2 engine (slightly tweaked for better effects though). This game goes one step further than BF 2 though, in that there are now only 4 character classes to choose from (Recon, Assault, Engineer, and Support), and YOU decide how to customize your kit. Kit unlocks work slightly differently than Battlefield 2 as well, with more ranks, but those ranks generally come quicker. Do you want to specialize as a sniper in the recon class? Or would you like to be more of an invisible Special Forces type complete with optical "predator type" camoflage, that uses high explosives to destroy things. OR, do you want to mix and match, and become the invisible sniper?? The choices are abundant here with 40 different unlockable weapons, and other pieces of equipment. YOU choose how quickly you wish to advance your character class. Do you want to shoot for the moon and max out a character class right away, or do you spread your unlocks amongst all the different classes to give yourself a bit of everything - the choice is yours.
2142 also is the first in the series that finally adds a new game type to the mix other than the classic "conquest" that you may be used to from SW BF 2. 2142 adds a mode called "Titan Mode" to the game. Personally, Titan mode is how I always dreamed Space assault would be for Battlefront 2. The idea is similar to conquest in that you need to "capture" point on the map, but instead of capturing control points, you are capturing missile silos that fire huge Anti-titan missiles at your opponents Titan (which is a huge floating aircraft carrier). Once the shields on the titan are down, you can continue to give it a pounding with the missiles, or you can board the enemy titan, and try to destroy it from within by destroying the internal computer consoles, and then going for the titan core for the win.
This is the reason I like 2142 - something different - Titan mode is a blast. My only complaint about 2142 is the current lack of maps that are available for it. There are very few maps (only 12 - 16 total) Although the maps are scaleable - (as are the maps in Battlefield 2). This means the maps scale to the amount of people playing them. In a 16 person map for example, you have a small map to fight over - making the battles that much more intense. 32 people and the map is slightly larger, with maybe an extra CP to capture. With 48 or 64 players, the maps are HUGE, and all of the CP's are unlocked, as well as aircraft, and other vehicles that aren't appropriate to the smaller versions of the map (the battle-walkers for instance)
All in all, I don't think you can go wrong with Battlefield 2 or 2142. Be forewarned however that even though Battlefield 2142 uses the same engine as Battlefield 2, 2142 is an absolute system pig, and will not run as smoothly as battlefield 2. Minimum requirements for both games state you need 512 megs of ram, but the games are barely playable unless you have 1 gigabyte of ram. If you only have a video card with 128 mb onboard ram, these games will look like crap - running in the absolute lowest settings only (which still look good, but not as good as they could). The difference for me when I play 2142 compared to battlefield 2 is that I have to turn some settings down, and I actually have to drop my resolution slightly in order to get decent framerates. Still both games are excellent.
I would stay away from Battlefield Vietnam (unless you can find it in a bargain bin for under $10 - I can never pass up any game for under $10). It does have some interesting things as part of it - the songlist for example, and the Huey's can be used as cargo choppers able to carry tanks (a - la the Laat - c), but noone is playing it anymore. Battlefield 1942 is decent if only for the mods available for it - it still has a larger community than Vietnam though).
Hope this info helps you make your decision. If you DO pick up 2142, add me to your ingame buddy list (one more 2142 feature not previously available in the series) - I go by PapaMambo.

like Razorpig was saying, 2142 is the way to go... if your rig can handle it that is. I guess if it can run battlefield 2 though its ok. Personally I enjoy 2142 alot more than I enjoy battlefield 2 merely for the sake of the futuristic style gameplay and titan mode  . Are you going to be playing mainly offline or do you just have dial-up. I can't really help you with the offline gameplay cause I play online but if you really can download the singleplayer maps that Carbine Impulse was talking about i'd say go for 2142 man!

I'd say battlefield 2142 just since its the newer game in the franchise however I dont know how many people actually play BF1942 since I never played that game... If you do get Battlefield 2 theres like over 900 servers which I say is extremely awesome for a game to be so popular after nearly 2 yrs!

sort of Off-topic: I am using demos as a tool to decide which one I want. I downloaded a demo of battlefeild 2, but when winrar screen comes up, it doesnt load start extracting. When I minimize the screen, It doesnt come up again when I click the bar at the bottom of the screen. Is it just doing this because the file is huge?

Sometimes opening big compressed files for me can take 15 mins to open, so that might also be happing for you.
I've never played the BF games but I'ld take BF 2 or 2124(sp?)
