People are going to have to create new accounts. Unless you think the idea of everyone using the same password (and whatever name they want on the day) for their leaderboard account is a good idea.
They don't plan on turning it into an actual leaderboard, but rather using it for important information and updates that the community should see.
Okay, that wasn't clear from your post. Seems like dubious value since you need to log in first to see it, and it's the only reason to log in. GameRanger also replaces the leaderboard display, but there's no real need to.
LRKfm946 wrote:ScottKevill wrote:The FreeGST guys did not even have the sense to patch with a domain name of equal or shorter length than the original gamespy.com. They got lucky with SWBF1/2 by munging the existing ones, but they'll have problems extending this to other games (as they are claiming they will). They can't hex-edit pure "gamespy.com" to "u.gameshare.de". They've broken the functional separation by making "master" equivalent to "available" (while they currently resolve to the same IP, that doesn't make it less wrong). This will cause problems further down the line. Their instructions are also inconsistent. Previously it was gameshare.info. Now it's either u.gameshare.me or d.gameshare.me, or even gameshare.de. This is pretty basic stuff to get right.
I think you're getting patches mixed up. GameMaster is completely separate from FreeGST. GameMaster (and their server u.gameshare.de) is the German version, while FreeGST (which
is conveniely hex-editable from gamespy.com to freegst.com) is the American patch that I'm suggesting we use. FreeGST will only support SWBF2, nothing else.
You're right, I did get those mixed up. That in itself is another problem -- it's a little ridiculous how many proposed server patches there are now. There are advocates from FreeGST, GameMaster, OpenSpy and probably even others posting about their solutions (all ultimately based on the OpenSpy code anyway). GameMaster isn't just the German. They mention separate servers for US and German in their instructions. My points still stand, however.
KeepAmazinn wrote:Quit yall's bitching! Dam grow up a little bit and stop bagging on the fact that someone made a patch so that you could continue playing a decade old game. If the very small remains (and I mean very) of this community have to be split into 4 different locations then so be it. At least you guys can still play this game online in some form. Before bashing anything other then gameranger take a step back and think that someone took time out of their day so that you could continue still playing this game.
This isn't about bashing. It's about what's best for SWBF2 long-term, not about what someone "took time out of their day" to do. It's about avoiding splintering the community. United we stand, divided we fall, and all that. Just as crowds attract crowds, the reverse is also true. This is what kills off communities.
Edit: Fixed quotes.

Hey, this was really fun
We hope you liked it too!
Seems like we've just begun
when suddenly we're through~
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye Gamespy
'Cause now it's time to go
But hey
I say
Well that's okay
'Cause we'll see each other soon I know!
Very soon I know~
We've played this game since time began
And made many a friend
We've had
Such fun
And weren't sure
When these amazing times would end
If they would ever end~
All good things must come to an end
That fact, we oft forget
But there's
One thing
We'll always know
Ziff Davis can lie back and eat a det!
Lie back and eat a det~
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye Gamespy
'Cause now it's time to go
But hey
I say
Well that's okay
'Cause we'll see each other soon I know!
Very soon I know~
Oh when we have to go away
It's kind of sad, but then (So sad but then)
It's nice
To know
It won't be long
'Till we get to see each other again!
'Till we meet again~
We won't be stopped by no Gamespy
We'll find ways to carry on!
Hamachi!
Tuungle!
And dear GameRanger!
And the Germans' .exe will help us on!
They all will help us on~
Goodbye, goodbye, good friends goodbye!
And tomorrow, just like today!
GameToast,
GameRanger, and Battlefront II
Will be waiting for you to come and play
Come and play
Come and play
Bye now!

May I mention that multiplayer is still going? Why aren't the servers all shut down?

Oh I'm sure it'll be down soon. Someone has to actually pull the plug still.

Not really, there are already backup solutions in place.

It's like they're pulling life support for its body but we already uploaded its brain to 5 different supercomputers.
What have we done...

I guess I look at it the other way. I'm impressed that the game stayed online for almost nine years. Very few games can do that.

They tried to kill SWBF2, but they failed. The game cannot be killed.
In all seriousness though, I'm just as baffled as anyone else. Either way, I'm still very happy.
EA's most recent information on the subject says this:
Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running. Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.
Either they somehow found a solution and haven't announced it yet, or we misinterpreted the meaning of "online services being closed down". Or they're just late. But I hope it's not that.

It's very likely they're just being lazy and haven't pulled the life support yet, unfortunately.

I just hope they remembered to load the LinkedDestroyables and LinkedShields scripts before munging. :d
