Kotor Performance = Bad

My friend yesterday gave me Kotor becuase it sucked badly performance wise on his comp. Well, it does the same for me. I meet/exceed in the requirements. I have 256mb of ram and ATI Radeon 9250 256mb video card. I read some in the forums over at biosoft or whatever the dev company name is and alot of people had this problem way back when. It seemed like it was something to do with the Catalyst Drivers. They said that there were a couple of versions that made Kotor lag badly, if I can recall it was 4.4 and 4.5? Well it was in the 4's. People had to go back and use 4.3 or earlier to fix the performance. My driver is version 6.1 and I get terrible performance. I'm sure that some of you Kotor players had to have had this prob because it seems as if many have. Are there any solutions other than going back and getting and older driver?

Right now I'm on Taris and it lags pretty good, which could be caused by the large number of people, but if in the uppcomming levels does the performance get any better? If so then I won't bother with this....

I thought it was 128mb for required. I'll check when I get home though.

I seriously doubt that it's got a 128MB RAM minimum. Most games are 512 at least.

Or 256 MB... Most games I have are at 256 MB RAM... And they're not that old.

You're not going to get much better by going to different environments, they're all about equally taxing on a CPU. I had some minor problems because of low RAM when I played, and although it may not be the same problem as yours, I was able to circumvent it by adjusting the framerate - KOTOR's options will let you adjust that. If you've not already tried it, you may want to.

It could just be your system cant take it. Your video card is an older one I believe (not sure but it looks really early in the Radeon series). Turn all settings on min and try..

Also make sure you dont have anything running in the background.

had the same problem and Yes it does get better

YES, settings to min, turn off grass/shadows/etc, go through ALL settings includeing sound and read descripions (they also have recommendations with the descriptions)
you probably don't have anything running in the background, but check any way (can also use CTRL+ALT+DELETE to check for programs in the background)

But make sure when you end processes to make sure you know what you're ending. Never ever ever ever ever end explorer though...

For ending processes:

Ctrl+Akt+Delete, then go to Processes

View them by "User Name"

Under your user name (for instance, my windows name is Forrest, so thats what I'd look at), you can end all processes except taskmgr.exe and explorer.exe

Now, thats the rule of thumb, and its not solid, so its best to know what your ending before you murder your computer. But yeah usually those two are all you leave up (taskmgr.exe is the task manager, which if you end when your in it..well then you cant end any other processes. It turns off when you exit so no worries. explorer.exe is your Desktop and the user interface of windows. Now ending it wont crash your system or break anything as far as I know (its probably not healthy though)..all that will do is make it reload and you'll be back to you're desktop in a matter of seconds.
