Eras

Post by Grev »

I have 2 questions about eras.

How would I get rid of one in a map, and how would I make it so that for the two eras, the map changes ever so slightly.

For the clone wars I want a mining area on my map, and then for gcw (Since its later) I want a more developed area... More evil ish...

Is it possible?

Basically you'd build two different maps and load one in each era.

I believe there's a thread in the modding FAQ for removing an era. If not, I'm sure there is a thread here somewhere.

As for the map contents changing for different eras, what are you planning exactly? If you simply want to have additional/different objects in one era, or have certain parts of the playable area open (or closed off) only for a certain mode or era, you can do that by using layers in ZE. (look at Hoth, for example) That's what they were meant for. If you're talking about using different terrain entirely, then go with Tean's advice.

Oh, right. For some reason I just assumed he was using terrain cutters (which cut the terrain at munge time). Mercury's right. Unless you want different terrain or are using terrain cutter objects, you can just have the stuff on different layers.

Short tip on layers; if you only want to add/remove objects from an era, but still keep others (like vec-spawns and cp's) you can get those objects in the base layer... That means it is like that in every layer (right?!)

Yep. Anything that should appear always regardless of Era/Gametype should be on the base layer for sake of ease.

Let me explain exactly what I need, and with that, it can be explained as to what I should do.

I want to make the cw map with a partly built city.

Then for the Galactic Civil war, I want it to already be a big city, with the mining area run down, and the sandcrawlers in different places, the land more "eroded."

Well, if you plan on doing a single change to the terrain you'll need a two maps. If it's just objects you can do it on layers.

That's exactly as we explained before Grev... If you only want to change objects you can use layers, if you want to change terrain, make 2 maps like Tean said...

There should be two levels in the addon version. Delete the one you don't want.

Check the FAQ, or use the search function. I recall someone asking about this not more than a couple of months ago.

Does VM allow you to select only one era for a land map? I was able to do it for space, but I think you have to take it out the hard way with a land map. At least, that's how my half-functional brain remembers it. *hit's brain with a wrench* I said work!

Btw, I believe deleting the compiled lvl file would be catastrophic, because you'd remove the data, but not the option to play it on the map selection screen, as far as I know. Just imagine all of the people trying to play the missing era complaining to you, or on SWBFFiles. "Your map crashes on me all the time!!111" "This map sucks!@" "Crapi mod..dosn't werk" "How do you mod???? SOMEONE HELP MEEEEE!!!!!!!!!" :funny2:

If the search function doesn't work, there's always looking thread by thread. :P

I've done it a few times, when I really needed to find something.

The FAQ topic people are posting about is the The BF2 Modding FAQ / "Everything you need" thread near the top of the SWBF2 Modding sub-forum. It has the answer you seek. 3rd item down from "Mapping & Zeroeditor".
