so after i reinstalled XSI and exported an model to xsi
went to the folder only to find that it and all my older xsi's were
now turned into XSIFTK files

any idea what went wrong / happened and or hwo to fix it

Don't worry; that's how they look now. If you exported as an .xsi 6.0 file they will convert in meshex just fine.
