Why this game doesn't look good to me.

I only played this game for like 5 min at a friend's house, and the main thing I noticed was that it took forever for the soldiers to die. The only things that actually kill them within ten seconds were turrets. Do battles go faster throughout the game or in the expansion pack? I want to know if it's worth getting if the battles are improved or the rest of the gameplay is awesome.
