was just playing X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter after a looooooooong brake and enjoyed the game (as i always did)
now i am wondering if anyone is still playing x-wing games
and what do you think, will there ever be a new star wars space simulator (SIMULATOR NOT AN ARCADE) and will it be nearly as good as x-wing games? i think its on the time Lucas Arts would make a new game in the series (but PLEASE dont screw it up, and PLEASE about original trilogy), there is a lack of modern space sims anyway, X3 is the only one IMO

Yeah, I hope LucasArts comes out with another game like Rogue Squadron. I never played X-wing vs TIE Fighter, but I have played Rogue Squadron that is similar to that, I think. I've only played the original Rogue Squadron, and I always got a kick out of that when I was younger. Now when I try to go play it again, I can never get the controls down. I'm always colliding into things. I know, it's sad. I really enjoyed the game. I hope to get the next two Rogue Squadrons for Christmas or my Bday.
I do hope LucasArts comes out with another flight simulator game, and hopefully for the Wii! They're too involved now with strategy games like Empire at War or KotOR or BF2. If they ever do come out with a new flight simulator, I hope it's based around the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. Those series are the most space-battle fights I've ever seen! I mean, it's the New Republic vs an enemy that uses LIVING weapons! What could get better than that?!

1) Rogue Squadron is an arcade flying game; it's more like what Battlefront has. X-Wing is a space combat sim, which is completely different.
2) KotOR and SWBF2 aren't strategy games.

Well, I wasn't saying they were actually strategy games, but that those are they're two top games right now, I think. Well, along with The Force Unleashed.

I remember playing TIE Fighter a few years ago without sound. It's was okay, probably because I had trouble understanding how it works.

yeah the controls are not that easy but thats the problem of all simulators so its ok
but mostly you need only a couple of buttons anyway and you can bind them to your joystick or keypad
and after 10 minutes of melee dogfights you know the most important buttons (or you wont survive

)

If your sound error is what I think it is, there's a fix (I remember spending some time a while ago looking for a fix). Let me know if this is still an issue (or if you still care), and I can point you in the right direction.

It's not a problem at all. I was playing on my old Packard Bell computer which is now dead after a good 11 years.
The controls were pretty decent although there were many functions. I remember the ships having limited ammo for the primary weapons. I always run out.

That was because one of the features of the X-Wing series was controlling the rates of power to different systems. You could shunt power from lasers into engines (and by default the lasers were at a low enough power that they didn't recharge) at the expense of the lasers recharging (or the shields, or the beam weapons, if you had them). Basically, there were five levels for each system, if I remember correctly (lasers, shields, beam):
0 power (shunting most power to engines, lasers actively losing power ), 1 power (shunting some power to engines, lasers losing power at slow rate), 2 power (default setting, lasers don't lose power but they don't recharge either), 3 power (using engine power, slow recharge rate for lasers), 4 power (using more engine power, fast recharge rate).
Basically, the more power you shunted to engines, the faster you could go. (It always helped to have a craft with shields or a beam weapon, because those were much better systems to shunt to engines than your lasers).

yep, in melee i always used a craft with shields and beams (mostly TIE Avenger or Defender, i dont like the rebellion, nor do i like imp gunboats and missile boats)
then i put laser to full recharge, sields to mantain power and redirected the whole power from beams to engines
therefore i still had my shields, never run out of energy and could move fast

Ooooh X-wing Alliance. I loved that game, I should play it again sometime. I always enjoyed the open environment, that I didn't have in Rouge Squadron. I would be getting into the game's simulator all the time and making different battle or Free For All scenarios.
Not to mention the Death Star level.

That has to be one of the funnest experiences in the whole game.
Good times.
