Hello, I have some quick questions.

Post by Loopy53 »

Hello. My name is Loopy. 53 is my lucky number. I have had Star wars battlefront 2 for a while but I never got around to modding it. Well, now I want to try and make some outstanding maps. And, with the help of gametoast's vast wealth of imformation, I shall do so! However, I have some quick questions:

1) Are the mod tools user friendly?
2) Are there any programs in particular I would need?
3) Do I need any coding experience? (ie C sharp, python)
4) Is the level editor easy to use? I tried using Unreal development kit once... Man, I hated it.
5) What software would I need to make custom 3D art?

Replies appreciated! Please add me on x-fire, loopy53. I look forward to modding here on gametoast! :D

Welcome to Gametoast!
Here are (my) answers (I can't do links right now cause I'm on a moble):
1. They are kind of user friendly, depending on your point of view; Once you get used to them it's easy.
2. GIMP, XSI, MSHviewer, Battlfront(of course)
3. An lua background is helpful.
4. Yep.
5. See #2 second commercial.

Hope this helps! Gametoast can always help if you get stuck! :D

Lua's based on C - if you have experience with that it'll make some things easier, but really for basic maps you won't need much coding ability. You'll probably want some code editor, perhaps Notepad++, to edit those LUA files, though the stock Notepad will do. GIMP or Paint.Net are for editing skins and textures. XSI and the associated tools/utilities, which you can find in the 3D Modelling forum, are for making new 3D models or editing existing ones.

Thanks! I have some more questions:

1) What format and size to textures need to be?
2) Can you edit the teams and vehicles?
3) Can you edit sound with the tools, and what software do I need to edit sounds.

Also, I am running into an odd problem. The visual munge isn't correctly compiling the files. It takes about 3 seconds, and at the end has a "quick time was not expected at this time" error. I will look into it and see if I cant find any answers.

*EDIT* Hm... The FAQ is your best friend! Textures need to be a power of 2, tga, no RGB compression. Yes I can edit vehicles/teams. I guess I would need the SWBF1 tools to edit sound, or no?

As for sound, I personally prefer using the BFI mod tools to munge my sound, though it is possible to get the BFII mod tool's sound munge working. I just didn't have the patience for it, to be perfectly honest.

Gah, another problem. Zeroeditor isnt working right... It wont open. Nothing pops up. I guess I can look into it and see if I can't find any solutions.

*EDIT* A simple search of Zero Editor turned up THIS. I should be good.

*EDIT* Solved. My antivirus was crashing the software.
