Post by GuitarMan »

[EDIT]

We've recently figured out my Linksys Wireless-G Network Adapter is causing my computer to crash seconds after it is plugged in. I am looking for a solution that doesn't include buying a new network adapter.

What happens when you try to start it normally? That would really give a better idea of how to fix it.

If i choose anything besides safw mode it repeats the process except after the startup screen with the loading bar it goes to a blue screen for not even q whole second before restarting. Every once in a while it will bring me to my desktop. But it will just crash again after a minute or two.

Hmm... That can be any number of things, since you don't have time to get a good look at the blue screen. Last time I had that it was a defective RAM stick, so that could be it, but there are about a zillion other things it could be. I would recommend booting into safe mode and backing up anything important before you do anything else.

I don't know if this will help define the problem at all, but the first day that it started happening, it my computer actually started up and work properly...only to crash once again after about 4 hours of being on and off the computer. And it gives me three safe mode options. Safe Mode. Safe Mode with networking, and safe mode with command prompt. Safe mode with networking DOES NOT work, but the other two do.

Also, how much do RAM sticks normally cost...just in case.

Around 25 USD or more, depending on size. If safe mode with networking doesn't work, just at a guess, try unplugging your internet adapter/cable/whatever and try it in normal mode again.

If you have multiple RAM sticks in the computer you can always power down and take one out then run the PC off and on for a few days. If it still acts up power down again, switch RAM sticks and repeat the process. That'll help in figuring out if that's your problem or not.

Hmmmm It seems that my linksys wireless-g network adapter WAS the problem. I booted my PC up without it plugged in and it worked perfect. The second I plugged it in my computer crashed. Ill reinstall the software and see where that gets me.

That's both weird and good. Something like that shouldn't be difficult or expensive to take care of, it might be something as simple as a corrupted driver.

I tried reienstalling the software and it worked untill it asked me to plug in my device...my PC crashed. I tried plugging it in to a different USB port...didnt work. So I looked at the "The system has recovered from a serious error" message and it gave me a list of files that were involved with the error which were "mini010809-04.dmp" and "sysdata.xml". I just thought that would help.

Are you running Windows Vista? I had this same exact problem too when I installed my Lynksys wireless adapter on my computer. My other computer running Windows XP had no problems. I have the internal kind (PCI) not the USB one the problem is the same nonetheless. The bug is actually with driver for the Vista version. So to fix the problem, you have to change the software's compatibility. Insert the CD, exit the auto-run, and search for the setup.exe on the CD. Right-click it and go to Properties. Go to Compatibility. Check the Run this program in compatibility mode for box and choose Windows XP SP2. Click Apply and then click OK. Now run the setup.exe. Your computer shouldn't crash anymore after this installation. I hope it works for you.

I am currently running XP SP2, and the compatablity modes were Windows 95, 98/ME, NT 4.0 (SP5), and 2000. Also, i've had the adapter for almost 4 years, and this problem started a week ago.

Oh. I'm not sure what problem is then. Has your computer undergone any major changes prior to that week that could possibly be causing the crashes? Maybe Lynksys products are just junk?

Truthfully that might be it. I've had very bad luck with LinkSys products.
