Modding newbie

Hi guys! I've been playing Battlefront 2 for over 6 or so years now, and now I think I'm ready to start modding. However I wanna take things REALLY slow so I don't screw things up, I've already downloaded the mod tools and munged a new world together, the first thing I wanna do instead of creating a map is making a sides mod first for the vanilla sides that come shipped with the game, just to get a good grasp on doing custom sides, can you link me any tutorials or any suggestions that can help me out along the way? Thanks!
