L8, could this be the problem

Basically the main show stopping error is it crashing upon entry. Now usually i would head back and survey my lua, sky, or recent odfs since their the usual culprits. However, i only crash when i'm close to the middle of the map where all the action takes place, and this only happens when i'm on the not flying. I've narrowed it down to this in the sptest log:

Message Severity: 3
.\graphics\pc\shaders\pcTerrainShader.cpp(176)
pcTerrainShader: detail texture expects L8 format!

This seems like the only thing that could cause such an error, because i've noticed that the spawns that crash are close to a specific terrain type. I've only created one new texture, and i'm using it as the detail texture for everything except naboo brick. Any ideas what the problem might be, if not the texture?

It is probably due to the arguments inserted in a texture's *.OPTION file... :|
