Does anyone have any shortcuts to lining up a minimap properly in game besides just trial and error (munge and play then munge again)?

How are you even setting up your minimap? If you create a mapbounds region and use an orthographic shot as a template, it's just about perfectly lined up ingame - always.

i'm using a mapbounds but then i'm using the screenshot command in ze

edit: but i'm doing it in perspective view not orthographic

in orthographic, should I line up the mapbounds region with the edges of ze?

If your screenshot is, like I said above, an orthographic shot, all you have to do is make the edges of your picture the edges of your mapbounds. Make nothing viewable except for props and regions, and then you've got the outline to line it up to. I rarely - if ever - have to fix alignment of the map if I do that.
