I'm trying to figure out what exactly Portals and Sectors do in the game... I read the FAQ about it, but it didn't really say anything about them, just how to get them to work.
Basically, what are Portals and Sectors, what do the do, how do they affect the game? etc.
Thanks

I'll be following this closely because I just realized, with a shock, that I know nothing about them either.

Re: Portals and Sectors?
I thought they were for maps like tantive so that not all the rooms are loaded unless your in a certain sector so that you get good performance

Re: Portals and Sectors?
From the documentation that comes with the modtools:
We do not have documentation for every possible thing, but for those things we do have clear documentation on, it certainly can't hurt to give them a readthrough every once in a while. This is a relatively simple visibility system that can cut down rendering time significantly on levels with heavy occlusion (indoor levels mainly). The system relies on breaking up the world into regions of visibility called Sectors and then linking them together through Portals. Sector A is visible from Sector B if and only if there is a path through visible portals leading from A to B. The real-time rendering book has a more in-depth explanation along with pretty pictures which can provide greater clarity.

In SWBF2 the portal and sector data is saved to a pvs file in the world1 folder, pvs more than likely stands for Potentially Visible Set, a quick google search for potentially visible set reveals this:

I think I'll just stick to playing around to see how they react.
Actually I have played around with them, word of advice they don't work so well on outside maps
