I looked over youtube but they weren't any help...
I've made a soccerball that looks pretty good in 3DS Max and I want to give it the black and white hexagon texture. I press 'm' to bring up materials and it comes up with a whole lot of grey spheres, what do I do next? I bought and registered the full version of 3DS max and I would really like to do something with it.

you wont find a modeling program where you can assign textures by pressing just one button

In the materials window in Max you can add maps/shaders(color, bump; phong, lambert etc) to your material. I cant remember for sure but i think you can just drag&drop your material on your object after that. You have to press a button called something like "View Material in Viewports" to see it in the Viewports.(Applies to Max 2009, dont know if they changed it since then).
All those grey spheres are material slots.

When using 3Ds Max, simply edit the material you want to apply to the object, and click and drag the material sphere to the object, it should apply the material to anything you have selected. You can even do this while having different faces selected, it will apply the material to the whole object, after you apply the material to the object you can select individual faces to have a different material. Or you can do it the hard way as demonstrated in this video:

Hope that helps

Well I followed the instructions on the video but I still can't get it to work, To apply the material do you have select what polygons you want textured, cause I want my whole soccer ball textured into a checkered look but when I drag and drop it has the 'can't do' sign. Is it easier if I just flatten the object into UV?

Nevermind then, 2010 is WAY too different than the version I use, they made it really [Watch your language, -Staff] after 3Ds Max 8

: ( well I guess my brain is too weak to handle 3ds 'textural side' on the spot, I'll spend a day and really look into it. Thanks anyway
