First thing you should do is read ALL of the documentation that came with the modtools, then after you finish reading it, read it again, and again.
Then after you establish the basics of modding from reading the documentation, start experimenting with different things, but take baby steps, don't go to the extremes right off the bat.
The "Everything you need" thread will answer a lot of undocumented questions, try things out for yourself, don't depend on someone else for all your answers, and make use of the search function at the top of the page by typing in keywords for your questions.
Research and experimentation will get you far in modding.

I have told you. A lot is already answered here on GameToast. The Search function can work really well. A lot can also be found in the documentation and in the all you need thread. The rest of the things can most of the time be understood by studying the stuff in the assets. If you play single player, you can see what has been done and by studying the corrosponding odf's and lua's(sometimes tricky to find them tough), you can learn how it's done.
I hope this helps.

[Edit] I see Ace beat me to it.

Ofcourse there is also just a case of trial and error. Just get the BF1 Mod tools, compare what the differences are and just try to copy over content.

Experimenting is the key.

Yup, everything you need is either in the Documentation, the FAQ/Everything You Need thread, or already posted here on the forums. It takes a little while to understand how things work, so like Fred said it's better to just mess around with the tools. Experiment, learn stuff. Mess with things with no intention at all of releasing what you're doing. Once you get the basics down you're ready to start your project.

Bottom line, take a little more time to read every single bit of info you can & take more time to play around in ZeroEdit.
