Right-click on your taskbar, go to the toolbars menu, and click Quick Launch.

Or you could pin your most used programs to your Start Menu...Still Quick Launch is better.

And no, lately i got lazy and let the desktop clutter up.... but then I got self conscious when creating this post and moved everything into a backup folder before taking the screenshot.

This is a recent change of scenery, but I had to replace the Imperial Venators with something.

I've had over 100 icons on my desktop before unknowingly, silly Vista and its icon bug, occasionally it moves icons into the very top left. (Where icons slowly pile up.)
