even better question, what are you doing to open it?
As for jedimodder, you can create any model in any program, just have to have a good 3d converter. The best one I found was deep exploration from right hemisphere (
http://www.righthemisphere.com/). The reason for this is the only .msh exporter that works as the designers intended is for xsi, which only accepts dotxsi and wavefront objects natively. There is a free version of xsi on softimage's website, but I don't think the plugin works with it (no one has confirmed nor disproved this theory) and, if i remember correctly, it does not have support for .obj files.

the xsi to mesh exporter has been tested with XSI ModTool and doesn't work.

It's XSI not xis. Goto
http://softimage.com/ . That is the official site. Maya is
http://www.alias.com/ , and 3d studios is
http://www.discreet.com/ . I normally do not like "search google" answers, but nimlot is right. Not to be mean, but it only took a few seconds to google those sites. Please refer there and through out the forum before posting common questions like that. That way you have a defense against the google comment.

I'm not surprised nothing comes up when you search for XIS. Next time try
searching for XSI instead
XIS.

About placing items, Saturn Labs is a good place to start. For the moving around, the docs included will help, if not, go to saturn labs.
