"Invalid Partition Table"

Recently my hard drive corrupted itself. Okay so not all of it. Only the

most crucial sector of the entire drive, the first sector, the Master Boot

Record, yah know the place on the drive that stores the location of all your

partitions and the file system each one is using? Yah, that one.

When I tried to boot from the drive my comp kept saying”Invalid Partition

Table” and refused to boot. The ironic thing about it was, that the only file

that I happened to save(on my usb flash drive) was an ESSAY *cries

with anguish, until he remembers that he is only retelling the story*

Starting from mid-March until like a week ago I did hours of research

online (on my mom's computer, much to her annoyance) and came up with

one very solid assumption, “There are no freeware MBR repair tools!” So I

downloaded several different demo versions of software that lets you see

your files, BUT you can't copy them or restore them. One nice thing was

that all of my files were there! EVERY LAST ONE! But, *sigh* I couldn't get

them unless I paid (A. $120(USD), (B. $100 or (C. $80. *deep sigh*. I was beginning to question whether or not all of my files (music, modding

files, skins, the source files to the Rihaken) were worth spending money on.... That is until I found DAH DA DA DAH

BootMaster($30USD)

I liked BootMaster because it was easy to use, they let you try it before

you buy it. That way you can see if it would actually restore your files if

you bought it.

So if you ever get a message on your screen that says “Invalid Partition

Table” get BootMaster it can save you a whole lot of hassle and cash.

Concise program, good price, great results. 9/10 They get one off because

it wasn't free :P .

So now I can (A. Start back in on the super secret mod that me and my

team are working on. *The map is back on guys! I'll pm you soon with

assignments and a new and better forum page*

and (B. Finish the Rihaken since the source files aren't toast. Hooray! I'm

am one very happy guy. :D

An excellect, free partition table recovery tool is TestDisk ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TestDisk ). I have used it quite a few times (I've worked a lot with old drives).

Look up RIP ( Recovery Is Possible )

There is always a free tool to do the job, you just have to know how to search for it.

Yah I tried fixmbr but it didn't work. My guess as to why it didn't work is that I have two partitions and it could be that fixmbr only gives you the correct mbr for one. Thanks for the links I'll keep those in mind next time my hard drive decides to die. Sorry for the spam :P :D
