No, don't get ME2 first. Trust me, you'll want to get both. The experience will not be as good for the second one, heck, I only got ME1 because I thought the save import concept was cool and wanted ME2 specifically for that, and they're insanely cheap; you can get brand new copies of ME2 for, like, 20 USD nowadays when it started out at 60 in January. Just get ME2 after you beat ME1.

If you are a fan of hardcore realism, Id say get ArmA 2: Combined Operations.
Its a military simulation with a rather easy to understand mission editor, many mods, custom missions and campaigns.
You can play as a simple soldier, squad leader, pilot, tank commander and much more, you can even command multiple squads at once with High Command module.
BTW playing Call of Duty games at veteran difficulty makes a completely different experience, youll love every piece of cover in game as your own mother.
