yep you read the title right, a new ds called 3DS, but whats the 3 i hear you ask, it means...

3D, yes playing games in 3D

Lol, when I read "3DS," I thought of the modeling program.

I heard my friend talk about a DS XL or something; is this what he was possibly referring to?

The DS XL is not the same thing; it's a new version of the DS with a larger form factor. The 3DS is not a new DS iteration, it's a new handheld:
