Okay, so I am editing stock mygeeto, I placed some objects around the map, munged, and nothing I placed showed up. I'm guessing I probably placed them in the wrong layer or something.

You can easily check that for yourself and verify whether that is the case.

If that isn't the problem, these objects you placed, in what directory are their ODF's and MSH's located? Make sure it is data_***\Worlds\***\odf and data_***\Worlds\***\msh, respectively.
