Tatooine: Outpost (Released)

I've had this map in the works for a while since I started the Hoth conversion, which was a just sideline project, as this has been my main focus. I've always wanted to make a good Tatooine map that is more movie accurate to the first film, and seeing Rends Mos Eisley Spaceport inspired me to try and make a good desert map. I also wanted to get away from the generic tatooine maps that have been released, so you will not see the sarlacc pit, which I never liked in the stock Dune Sea map, as it just didn't work.
Progress so far: Basically I've completed the sides which are only visual changes, as I feel you can't really get better balance than the stock units. It doesn't mean I won't add support for other mods but my main concern at the moment is getting the gameplay right, and adding more props to the world. I think this will probably be my longest project, so I wont be rushing it out like the two conversions I've done. I've pretty much done most of the work on the terrain but it still can be improved, and I've also got some extensive planning to do. At the moment it is just under 50% complete, so there is still a lot of work to do.
Thanks to Rends for his Mos Eisley Spaceport assets.

Looks alot like the movies. How large is it exactly? I can't really tell from the pictures. My only concern is the lack of cover. From my experiance, unless the AI can't aim, you need a lot of cover in order to have the map be survivable.

Looks interesting, I like the open desert feel of the map, maybe add a sandstorm a make the AI viabilty low.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping
I think It's probably about the size of the default Yavin map, maybe a bit bigger. The use of cover will be mainly near CP's but I will also add a lot of cover hintnodes. The first screenshot shows the use of crates which will be near all the CP's, and I may use some crashed ships near the sand dunes. I didn't really want to use many rocks, as it doesn't look that natural but I will probably use some on the flatter plains between the main bases.

Thanks!
It has a sun but I will add another one. Thanks for reminding me.

Thanks, that's a really good idea, and I have been thinking along those lines. Would make it a lot more realistic.

That's in already, so no worries.

Looks great!

But to expand on this idea...

...maybe you could set it up to be a random weather system? That way, you could keep your current environment [which I think looks great - it really conveys how I would expect a desert to look really well], and also sometimes have a sandstorm. I think dawn/sunset would also look great.

Thanks, that's another great idea. I'll keep it in mind for the later stages.

Thanks martin105038
Ok, this is a very small update just to show some simple skin changes I made to Rends death star crates, so as to give them more of a sandy weathered look:
I'll be making a bigger update with some new screenshots in a few days.

Thank you, and although I wasn't going to post another update for a few days, I have since seen CodaRez's improved stock stormtroopers release, which are just perfect, and very movie accurate, so I just had to use the shocktrooper in my map.
...and thank you CodaRez, and DarthD.U.C.K. for these wonderful models. Seriously, I'm not worthy.
So here they are for your delectation, and mine of course.

Looks great.

If you want (eventual) LD support for this map I'm more than willing to help out.

For clone wars, you should have the 212th attack battalion with commander cody.

Thanks guru! The krayt definitely gives it that classic New Hope feel

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it some consideration.

Reminds me a lot of those scenes in Tatooine at the beginning of A New Hope, it looks quite good, I have one nitpick, though: the sand is too bright/yellow-ish, specially when seen from a distance, maybe it's the lighting, I don't know.

Thanks for pointing that out. I agree, and did try to make it more sandy coloured, which actually looked good in the editor but when I munged the map the sand dune near the krayt dragon looked dark grey, so I put it back the way it was. Unfortunately I didn't take any screenshots ingame of the new color but you can see a slight difference in this comparison in the editor. It just didn't look that good ingame, which is strange. Even though it is a little light the way it is, It actually looks pretty good ingame.
