Battlefront II crashing problems

Post by The Nasal Abyss »

Every time I start up Battlefront II, I'm able to play one series of games in instant action (this series could be anywhere ranging from one game to as many as I want to play) but the moment I get back to the main menu, it starts chugging and being really choppy. It progressively gets worse in mere seconds and if I try to start a game, Battlefront II crashes so hard that it freezes my computer and I have to reset. That also happens if I just try to exit the game normally.

I'm running on Windows XP. I have the game on steam, so it's a DD version. I've never had this problem before and it randomly just started happening. I've tried reinstalling the game, I've removed all addons and 1.3 patch stuff, and it still happens vanilla. I've tried running it all on low settings, and in low resolutions, turning the audio off, tried different audio settings. None of it works, the problem still persists. I really don't want to try re-formatting, I want that to be the absolute last ditch effort. But that would most likely fix the problem.

I can't mod with the game being in this shape, it makes it impossible to test and make revisions. I'd love to be able to play this game again :/

Can anybody help?

Oh, wait, crap, I think that this is most likely either the beginning of a hard drive failure or one or more of your computer's other components is failing/not being cooled sufficiently, namely the processor and/or graphics card. I was having a very similar problem with all of my games a couple months ago and it turned out that my graphics card's fan had stopped spinning due to too much friction between the fan's rotor the base of the fan. Applying a bit of WD-40 to where the rotor and the fan connect fixed the problem in a snap.

But the weirdest thing is is that my computer isn't old, all of the components/fans are working properly (I've got my case opened up right now, and I put the computer together when I originally got it so I know how everything sounds/looks when it's working perfectly) and every single other pc game I have (Battlefield 3, The Witcher 2, Skyrim, etc.) are working perfectly.

I really don't know what is going on! It could be hard-drive related, but then other games would be affected, right? So it's probably not that.

Sometimes hard drive problems affect things globally, sometimes not. Chances are Battlefront's installed in a bad or corrupted sector. I'd suggest running chkdsk; I can't remember how and I'm currently at the NWAPA marching band competition in Oregon so you'll have to Google it. :P I just thought I'd let you know, we're all counting on you.

That didn't find anything out of the ordinary either. Ugh.

Try playing it without Steam. It might actually work. I did that with some other games and they worked.
