Shadow problems

Post by SkinnyODST »

Ok so I looked at the FAQ`s and have successfully added lighting to my world but most of the props like trees and yavin building ruins don`t cast shadows, and yes I of course checked cast shadows.

Make sure your shadow settings are set on "High" or "on". Maybe those objects also just don't have shadowvolumes. However at least the terrain should have shadows then (softer shadows). Make sure you also burn your terrain too as well.

I can say for sure that none of the shipped tree assets have shadowvolumes. The reason for this is the fact that they would eat up a huge portion of the engine's rendering budget (i.e. it'd be super laggy). The workaround for tree shadows is to have a world shadow map. Take a look at Endor's ENVFX file for an example of how to use them.

Hm...I personally would have take cylinders as shadowvolumes and used the World shadow map as the leaves. That's what they actually did on Endor if I remember.

Nope, the Endor trees are entirely without shadowvolumes. The problem with your half-and-half workaround is world shadow map shadows are blurred whereas shadowvolume shadows are sharp and precise, and they don't mix well together. (Isn't working with this game's shadows just the *best*? :u)
