Do you need java? If you're thirsty, go get a nice big mugful
Anyways, Java is used for running Java based applications. So, if you're using Java applications, you need to install Java.
As far as the harddrive goes, my answer would be to back up important data and then just reinstall windows as thats what I usually do.
If you don't want to take that path (sigh) you're going to have to go through and delete files manually.

I killed java and nothing devastating occured. I can now run Photoshop, but I only get five actions before a crash . . .
I have a 200 Gig D drive, and I don't see where all 15 of the Gigs go. It doesn't make sense. No games, no big projects . . . Most of the documents are gone anyway!

XP or Vista?
I know that Vista takes up nearly 15gb by itself.

Here's a post from my second favorite web site, Lifehacker.com (And yes, my favorite website is GameToast)
Declutter Your Hard Drive
It has some good tips on getting rid of all that unneeded junk.

All my SWBF2 programs are written in Java. Your browser uses a Java plug-in or from the installed, full version.
You should uninstall the programs you don't use, delete your temp files, and clear out your temp internet files.
You can also backup only what you want to keep, then wipe out the hard drive and start fresh (maybe on the 200GB one). But this takes a lot longer, and you can't use your computer till you're done. (I just 'refreshed' my notebook.)

Very soon I shall be able to kill my C drive almost completely after dumping it all on 400 gig external hard drive, then I should have enough room.
