How make spherical textures? (Spherical maps for planets)

Hello! I need to create a model of a "moon" (not the moon from the earth), so I need to create a texture that can be applied in spherical projection, like this texture
such notice, like the textures of heaven in BFII,
the edges are consistent, and by joining the ends texture gives a good result.
Then I wonder, as it was created this texture? used a 3D program or can be done in an image editor?
Thanks.

I'm not sure on what you are asking but I will try. You simply have to unwrap it and save it as a UV map. Then you open up your image editor. Personally, all I know of is GIMP but I am assuming PS has one too, but under "Map" in GIMP you can choose to make the texture seamless, so both ends match up and makes the sphere look good.

Because its only one moon and not the earth you can use
this method to make your map seamless.

thanks guys! the seamless option in Gimp works fine.

PS, I think that for something like a moon GIMP would work fine, but for continents and stuff I would recommend the method ANDEWEGET described.
