Skinning the units

ok....im new to changing skins...i want to make swamp troopers for my upcoming map: Kashyyyk:Wroshyyyr Canyon
and i was wondering, in GIMP, what do you do? im confused on how to get the skins loaded in GIMP and on how to edit them, well basicly i dont know anything. Can anyone tell me the first basics in skins editing?
