New Game System
So, I'm thinking of getting a new game system. I currently have a Wii and a PC. The Wii is getting more focused on family games, and being a "hardcore" gamer, I feel I need to ramp up my gaming options. So, the question is, Xbox 360? PS3? or wait? At 17, and having the Wii as my first console ever, this decision is not going to be an easy one for me.
I've heard the Xbox 360 has better games, and having played one more than a PS3, I'm slightly biased towards it. However, I'm not sure I want to risk the Red Ring of Death and the mediocre Microsoft Tech Support. I'm not saying the support is terrible, its just not as great as Nintendo's or Sony's.
On the other hand, the PS3 is said to have better graphics, it can play Blu-Ray, and it doesn't break down as often. Plus, as a bonus, Sony has recently lowered prices on the PS3.
There are also rumors of the 4th-gen systems coming either sometime next year or the year after, and with next gen systems comes a possibly better Nintendo system with the next Super Smash Bros. and the next Zelda game, which is really what keeps me interested in Nintendo.
So, I figured, why not ask a gaming community for a little help? Any and all opinions are welcome, becasue I'm really not sure what I should do, but i feel something is missing from my gaming career.

No, please, do not ask that cursed question over the internet or you shall doom us all!
Just get the console that fits your own purposes and preferences, each of them have their own advantages and disadvantages, you will inevitably be annoyed by certain aspects of a console and praise it's qualities, everything has downsides and upsides, but don't ask anything related to consoles in the internet or you will know true fanboyism and childish behavior through the endless "my console is better than yours" flame wars.

360 if you want more games (Halo 3/ODST, Left 4 Dead, etc.) and a built in Netflix Streaming, PS3 if you want Blu-Ray and that new game L...sorry, "M.A.G" (
)
Red ringing really isn't a problem anymore, it only took me two weeks to get mine back, it's free to repair, and as long as you go through xbox.com to send it, it'll be fine. Just don't get freaked out when the site glitches and says you don't currently have an xbox being transferred, it's a site error that means nothing. But, chances are, you won't get one depending on when the console was made. The old company that made the brittle parts was decommissioned, and most of the repaired boxes won't RRoD again.
But seriously though, M.A.G, 250 people per game?! Are they crazy? That will never work in the real world's internet!

Re: New Game System
Xbox 360 all the way. With Project Natal well in the works and all of the other goodies the 360 comes with, its well worth it. Unless, you want to play online a lot, that's my only complaint against Xbox Live is the charge for Multi-player whereas the PlayStation Network service is free. The 360 has a wide variety of great games. The PS3 has slightly higher graphics but fewer games. So, if you don't mind the Xbox Live feeds I'd well recommend it.

Ditto what the others have said. I'm a rather happy Wii-60er.
And the 360 has Mass Effect. Get it for the blue alien chicks.

Re: New Game System
XBOX360, though it may have more hardware issues, is better for more general gaming, but the PlayStation 3, while it offers no more than the Xbox in terms of games (except LittleBigPlanet, which is a PS3 must-have), it has lots of capabilities that go beyond gaming, much like a PC would, though since you already have a PC, an XBOX360 might be more down your alley.
Or, alternatively, you could always be happy with what you have
In all honesty, at this point I'd hold out the money for something else. The XBOX360 and PS3 have been out for a while now (though this doesn't mean too much, as the PS2 also has also been out for ages), and no doubt a newer gaming console of some sort may be on the way that may be more worth your money.

Microsoft and Sony both are saying that the earliest a new console will be out is 2015, so I don't think he has to worry about that.

Anyway, I'd go with the 360 for the games and general gameplay. Live may cost money but the connection is usually fantastic (Yes, I did play CoD 5 at my mates on the Playstation Network and it was laggy as hell). ODST comes out soon as well.Twilight_Warrior wrote: Any and all opinions are welcome

I'd go with the 360. I would get one myself, as it has great graphics and lots of downloadable stuff, but there's a little something called parents that's preventing me from getting one.

Technically that is two words, and rarely are things ever representative of any of the statements:Jendo7 wrote:One word, Halo 3. Need I say more.
"nuff said"
"need I say more"
...et al.
The problem is that your (or anyone's) tastes can not be representative of everyone's tastes.
In answer to the OP:
I don't have either system, but like you I have taken a look at them ever since PS3 dropped their price. Kotaku did a nice, small article comparing the two:

Here is a list of PS3 console exclusives:

Here is a list of XBox 360 console exclusives:

I would honestly suggest just comparing the two and deciding which of the two you like. I know what I have considered is that for the previous generation, I decided to buy a PS2 really only because of Final Fantasy 10 (and it also turned out to be a good investment in terms of having a DVD player). I ended up with a few more games, but I rarely buy video games anyway (and much more infrequently, console games). For this current generation, the PS3 again offers a good price on the "next gen" of movie player, but to be honest having a Blu-Ray player isn't a concern for me, because I don't see myself as owning a high-def TV any time in the future (although if you want a Blu-Ray player it is probably the better buy). They look pretty equal other than that (although PS3 seems to have less expensive internet), but I know for me right now, XBox 360 looks like a slightly better buy based on games available for it (and this generation's Final Fantasy isn't exclusive to PS3).

Also, if your friends play Live or PSN, then that should be considered.
I myself love my 360. While about 3 PS3 games look good to me, I'll never get one. I wish Xbox Live was free, it's not, but I still love it, and I love playing with my friends. I don't feel like getting into all my favorite things about it.

Sony has been making console games a lot longer than microsoft, so I would say, Playstation 3.

That is a pretty inaccurate comparison. Neither company makes much in terms of in-house video game software ("console games"). Their respective primary contributions are the systems themselves (the hardware), and Microsoft has been in the computer biz for longer than Sony.StarkillerMarek wrote:Sony has been making console games a lot longer than microsoft, so I would say, Playstation 3.

I think it's a frivolous comparison either way, because none of this is indicative of "reliability." They are both comparable consoles (although just based on the unscientific assessment of feedback it does seem like Playstation owners have fewer hardware issues than Xbox owners) and insomuch as reliability is concerned, the videogame console industry is young enough and the technology changes often enough that a difference of a few years in when each company first produced a dedicated video game console is irrelevant.

Re: New Game System
I meant console systems. Microsoft in itself has been know to be less reliable then Sony. Their computers are meant to be the "workman's computer". They always seem to be trying to use the least amount of fail-safes as they have to. Not to say that they are the only ones who do, every company does this to some extent. If you look at Gamestop or other companies, there seem to be many more "refurbished" X-boxs, which makes me believe that they are less reliable. And if you aren't concerned about reliability, Playstations have more raw power than Xboxs. All of this compelled me to buy a Playstation 3.Maveritchell wrote:That is a pretty inaccurate comparison. What it really boils down to is the question about online multiplayer. Xbox Live is far more advanced than Playstation Network. Me, I don't use the online multiplayer, so this did not effect me.
This overall discusion being brought to us is wrong. You want to buy something, figure it out for yourself. This comparison has been discussed many a time before.

I personally prefer the XBox. All of the reason stated above mostly sum my reason up. A few more:
