Alpha channels and droid/imp/all skins

I've tried reskinning Vader, but his skins was all....transparent. I got the same thing while trying to reskin some Alliance units (soldier, for example) and droids. Why are they like that?
Also, what are alpha channels? The art guide didn't tell me much about them.

Yes, I do know a FAQ thread exists. It is my second stop, right after the shipped docs. I do these things step-by-step, the proper way. But video tuts I've never been good with. Is there a simple, short, verbal explaination?

Yes.
It's
in the video tutorial. Everything you do is written out in the video. It really doesn't get any easier than that.

Yes, but the vid tut is made in a older version of GIMP, and doesnt apply anymore.
Get a different photoeditor like Photofiltre that doesnt support alpha layers.

It's exactly the same process, except you go to Colors->Components instead of Image->Mode. Good grief, how much do you want your hand held?
