Today it was announced that Lucasfilm Ltd. and Disney Interactive are entering into a multi-year, multi-title exclusive licensing agreement with Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) for the creation of new high quality Star Wars games spanning multiple genres for console, PC, mobile, and tablets.

Industry leaders and creators of best-in-class blockbuster games, the development and publishing teams at EA will collaborate with the creative teams at Lucasfilm to provide audiences with all-new gaming experiences set in the ever-expanding Star Wars galaxy. As part of the agreement, EA studio teams DICE (Battlefield series) and Visceral (Dead Space series) will join BioWare (Mass Effect series, Star Wars: The Old Republic) in the development of new Star Wars games.

"Our number one objective was to find a developer who could consistently deliver our fans great Star Wars games for years to come," said Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm. "When we looked at the talent of the teams that EA was committing to our games and the quality of their vision for Star Wars, the choice was clear."

While EA studios will develop for the core Star Wars gaming audience, Disney Interactive will focus on delivering new Star Wars games for casual audiences on mobile, social, tablet, and online gaming platforms.

"This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come," said John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive. "Collaborating with one of the world's premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to fans around the world."

"Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe," said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. "Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay."

More information, including titles in development, will be announced in the coming months. Continue to check StarWars.com for updates on the future of Star Wars gaming.
A New Hope.
Certainly not my first choice, but it's better than nothing.

EA holds the assets for Pandemic, right? Does that mean the deal could mean a potential ZeroEngine return? I'm thinking, of course, if they still wanted to try SWBFIII.

My guess is (sorry, Tean) DICE will be in charge of a potential SWBF3. So they'll use their Frostbite engine instead.

Zero Engine is like, 10 years old, they wouldn't use it.
They better make a SWBFIII now, its long due and it would sell better than any other star wars game they could make. Its what all of the fans are clamoring for.

I would love it to play a swbf3 with the Frostbite engine...or a swbf3 at all

Frostbite or RenderWare would be good.

Battlefront on Frostbite would be fantastic. Imagine, in space battles, being able to completely destroy an enemy ship... :D

So battlefront 3 with destructible everything? Sounds good to me

If they have any brains or sense, yes.

Exclusive rights to Star Wars games for EA is bad.
But a Star Wars: Battlefield is definitely one of the better options for a Star Wars multiplayer shooter.

They're taking suggestions. If you search #starwarsnextgen on twitter, there is just a flood of requests for SWBFIII on Frostbite.

Not really. EA may be evil in the eyes of gamers, but they put out great games. I see nothing but positive things coming from this. We'll get games that we actually care about, unlike Kinect Star Wars. (which was actually better than what the critics said)

In the right hands RenderWare can be amazing (I.E. Criterion). But there's something apparently difficult with it given Fallout 3/New Vegas. Those games were/are crazy buggy.

Yeah. I mean, I didn't HATE it (but I didn't love it either). However, my little brother LOVES it.

Well im glad we will at least get games with in the next 2 years, i think I will go help the twitter bomb myself.

Only possible down sides from this is

1.) Micro-transactions, something the formor CEO promised all future EA titles to have (Yucky).
2.) Looks like Origin will finally have games that people want to play on it (Really not looking forward to making an account for it. Guess no Wii U titles for it since EA turned their back on Nintendo)).
3.) DLC Train (chugga chugga chugga chugga chu chu).
4.) Well actually I dont have a number 4. I like evens ;p

As to why im inclined to think that this is what might happen is because of their track record. I do not want these games to hold back and hopefully they prove us wrong and show us that with new management, they will correct these practices.

Teancum, I didn't mean that in terms of what EA will produce but what others (like Obsidian) will not produce. I'm happy that this agreement exists and for the future of Star Wars gaming it's great. But it could have been beret, more diverse.
