Windows Vista

Windows Vista is
Microsoft's new OS.
I just recently installed the Beta RC2 on my computer. But it will only last 6 months.
Vista will be released to the public on January 30, 2007.
Here's what some of it looks like...
Star Wars Battlefront II works just fine on
Vista, which made me happy. So does the
SWBF1 1.7.9 Conversion Pack installation, as you can see.
The format is completely different.
Microsoft has changed pretty much everything. There are also a lot of new features. And I mean a lot.
Will you be getting
Vista?

I'm Running RC1 (but you knew that anyway Karnage)
Actually, '6 months' isn't quite the right term, it lasts until June 2007, so, pending on when in June, and how long ago you installed it, it could be shorter or longer than 6 months.
Leastwise, that's what RC1 says.
So far only one compatibility issue (Starcraft wouldn't install off of the disc, so i copied the game files from another computer that had it installed.)
Surprisingly, Word 97 installed and runs great! Most windows manufactured programs will probably be compatible.
C++ Express for XP also installed without a problem. GIMP 2 Also works just fine. iTunes installed and works fine.
I plan on buying Vista Ultimate

I won't be buying Vista because my laptop (when I get it) comes with the express upgrade to Vista when it's released. I sooo wish I could install the Beta but I don't want to mess up my computer again if something goes wrong.

@Karnage - I like the GameToast icon on your desktop

When I get my next computer, Vista will prolly be on all of the computers, so yeah... I'll probably just get one then.

Manufacturer: Dell e1505
Processor: Intel Core Duo (Dual Core) 1.83Ghz, 667Mhz Fsb
RAM: 1GB
HD: 80GB
Video Card: ATI Radeon Express x1400 (128MB dedicated, 255MB shared)
Display: Built-in LCD
Sound: Sigma tel
Keyboard: Built in
Mouse: Touch Pad or Wireless Mouse
Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate RC1
That's my system, runs great!
Although I would recommend waiting until a little after Vista is released before buying it, because there is a slight problem with my display after resuming from standby (Dell or Microsoft will probably fix this soon)
I will get Ultimate for less than retail probably, and an express upgrade is a so-so idea....I would just say to wait till January 30th if you'll be buying a new computer soon (as some of you have mentioned.), That way you get Vista with you computer, and will not have to pay for shipping for the Vista express upgrade.

But a lot less people would buy Vista. So Microsoft was smart saving it only for Vista.

I'm currently running Windows Vista Ultimate RTM (Gonna run that until January, then I'll buy the RTM). Its absolutely stunning what they did in the past 5 years. I've been betatesting since build 4051 (back in 2003), and compared too what I run back then, this is amazing, brilliant, etc.. Windows Vista is the best and most exciting Windows release since Windows 95!
And the June 2007 limit is a lie. Microsoft already stopped its beta program, since Its impossible for me too install RC2, but I can install the RTM with my RC2 key. But Windows Vista also has one great function: You can install without a key. You will get 14 days too buy a key then, but its cool Microsoft integrated this function into their OS ^^

The amount of players would be the same, because a server hosted on XP would also work for Vista.

Halo 2 is Vista exclusive. How can you run a server on XP?

You still have to run halo 2 vista to even play it, right?? And I guess it was a good idea to save halo for Vista, because alot of people would ignore it.
Vista Links etc...

I shall be buying the Vista Home Premium Edition and then downloading the flurry of patches, hotfixes and service packs that will undoubtably quickly follow.
Here are some useful links for you all:
Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor
It'll let you see if your PC can run Windows Vista. It does this by checking your pc and giving you information on potential system, device, and program compatibility issues. If you're lucky it may recommend ways to resolve them. Upgrade Advisor can also help you choose which edition of Windows Vista best suits your needs.
Windows Vista Editions
lets you see further information about the various different features of each edition.
Upgrade Planning
The majority of us getting Vista will probably be upgrading, this link shows you whether your current system will require a "clean" install (basically wiping everytrhing - backups required!) or whether it can do a simple "in place" upgrade where everything (applications and files etc...) are automatically handled and kept.
Windows Vista Home Page
Worth checking out once in a while for new information.
For those that didn't know but need to,
Vista can't run the current version of SQL Server 2005 Express. That's the desktop version of SQL Server
