WIP - Gylesh: Seabed

Post by Xavious »

I lied. I said I wasn't going to be making any more maps or mods for Battlefront II, but I found I really just couldn't resist. :P

Anyways, I'm proud to present my newest work-in-progress, Glylesh: Seabed, a map set in a research facility at the bottom of a dark ocean. I'm designing the map for a campaign mode, though I'll also add in conquest and maybe hunt as well.

I won't say much right now about the campaign mode and story right now. The main character is an Imperial prisoner-of-war who, after being captured, was sent to an Imperial research base. The campaign revolves around the main character escaping the facility and, in the proccess, acquiring vital information about the "secret projects" the Empire is working on.

Now that I've revealed a little about the map, here's a couple screenshots for you all to enjoy.
Hidden/Spoiler:
You start in a strange room filled with trees and foliage. From here, you find a blocked exit, and then have to explore the area to find a time bomb to blow open the door.
Image
Hidden/Spoiler:
However, the loud noise caused by the explosion woke something up...
Image
Hidden/Spoiler:
Just what is that thing anyways?
Image
Hidden/Spoiler:
This is the exit. Once you've defeated the monster, you'll be able to leave the room. However, don't think you're safe yet. Not by a loooooong shot.
Image
Hidden/Spoiler:
Just a hangar. This will be important later in the mission.
Image
Hidden/Spoiler:
Finally, this is one of the halls leading deeper into the base. What dangers lurk within? You'll have to play the map to find out...
Image
That's all for now. I'll keep you all posted. For now, feel free to post comments/suggestions/criticisms.

I love underwater maps.

One question though: why would the empire keep their secret plans in the same place they keep their prisoners? :P

I wish you luck, this looks interesting.

More importantly, why do acklays keep showing up underwater?

Sounds like a neat map, what with the Rebel running through an underwater Imperial base trying to acquire information about a secret Imperial project. :P

Looks kinda dark, though. I've seen some really well-designed maps that lost a lot in gameplay simply because they were too dark to really enjoy (delinquent's Imperial Base, authraw's Manaan). Make sure that functionally the map is bright enough to enjoy, even if your lighting makes it "appear" dark.

They aren't leaving their plans lying around; rather, they're using the main character as part of their experiments.

Well, technically, he's not in the water... :P

Well, technically, he's not a Rebel, as the story actually takes place before the Rebel Alliance formed, and technically he's not so much trying to acquire information as he is trying to escape... :P

Seems like a spin-off of the Rebel Ops missions. Nevertheless, Xavious' stuff is always good.

Underwater map + Xavious + a decent campaign= Awesome!
Although, I agree with Mav, the map should be a little bit brighter.

Because acklays are actually underwater creatures, but they often hunt on land. Kinda like an alligator or crocodile.

*edit* On a side note, why is everything dark? I can't see anything.

Well, it is in the bottom of the deep blue sea... and light doesn't travel that far underwater...

The "Acklay cage" showcased in the first four screenshots is dark to the point where it's hard to see because I'm trying to make it at least a little bit scary. I'm going to place multiple spawnpoints for the Acklay that you will have to fight so it will hopefully spawn someplace random every time you play.

The rest of the base is decently lighter than the cage. If you compare the first four screenshots to the last two, you'll notice the difference. (Though it's a tad bit lighter now in both places now)

I'll be sure to have a nice update for you all tommorrow, so stay tuned.

Sounds familiar eh? :funny2:

Peoples ideas are sooo original these days. :D

Now, back on topic, I love the whole feel of the map, it as a eerie feel to it that fits well in with the look of the map.

Reminds me on Manaan Murky Depths, this map was also really dark (although it had blue lightning instead of green), and I still love this map and play it from time to time.
So if you can combine a creepy atmosphere with good gameplay it would be a total win.
Plus it takes place in the Imperial Era (sry wanted to say GCW but as Xavious said it takes place before the rebellion was founded) and its always a good argument for me to play a map.
And last but not least it will have a campaign.

All in all this maps looks extremely good by now, lets hope it will be just better. :D

I doubt I'm going to be able to finish the map at this point. My computer crashed while working on the map in ZeroEdit and I lost everything related to the construction of the map.

I still have my scripts and sides, so if there's interest, I'll rebuild the map from scratch and start over. But if nobody really cares, I can just scrap the project and do something else.
