Worst video game ever made

Post by DarthHamster »

This made me laugh pretty hard. While searching for the all time worst video game ever made I stumbled upon this, Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. After watching and reading the reviews I completly agree with what GameSpots Alex Navarro had to say about it, "this game is as bad as your mind will allow you to comprehend". Check out the links. :)

Review: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/driving/bigr ... ead-review

Review Video: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/driving/bigr ... deo-review

Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Rigs

Here's a description of why the game is so bad, read and be amazed.
Hidden/Spoiler:
The back cover of Big Rigs states that the player may "race trucks across the country trying to deliver illegal cargo, with cops chasing them." GameSpot's Alex Navarro wrote that this description of the game is nothing more than "horrible, horrible lies", since there are no police in the game. Additionally he pointed out that the computer-controlled opponent vehicles have no AI and never move from the starting position, making even the description of the gameplay as a "race" questionable.

There are technically no obstacles for the player to negotiate in Big Rigs, as the truck may freely be driven on and off roads without any loss of traction, up or down 90° slopes with no loss or gain of speed, through structures such as buildings and trees, simply falling right through bridges, and even out of the boundaries of the map into an endless grey void. When the player's vehicle is put into reverse, it can accelerate indefinitely, but the truck will halt instantly when the reverse key is released.

Though there appear to be five courses from which to choose, only four are playable. The fifth map, titled "Small Town Road", does not work and selecting it crashes the game.

Upon completion of the race, the player is presented with digital representation of a large three-handled trophy and the text "YOU'RE WINNER !" The game occasionally fails to distinguish between whether the player is starting or finishing the race when they pass through the starting point, and so this congratulatory screen may appear within seconds of starting a game, ending the race before it even begins.

Stellar Stone released a patch that addressed some of the game's complaints. With the patch, the opponent vehicles participate in the race, but stop before they reach the finish line, making the game still impossible to lose. Small Town Road, the non-functional track, was replaced with an exact mirror image of the first track, Devil Passage 1. Some versions of the patch replaced the "YOU'RE WINNER !" text with "YOU WIN!". Sound effects were also added, and later copies shipped with the patch by default. However, no effort was made to alter the physics of the game, and other common complaints were not addressed.

Games Reception
Hidden/Spoiler:
Big Rigs received universally negative reviews. Matt Wadleigh of Thunderbolt Games stated "I wish I could think of some redeeming factors for [Big Rigs], but there simply aren't any", rating the game a score of 1/10. It was also featured on the X-Play "Games You Should Never Buy" segment where Morgan Webb, one of the hosts, described Big Rigs as "the worst game ever made," and refused to even rate it as their 1/5 rating system did not feature a zero score. Netjak gave the game 0.0, commenting that a preferable negative score was not given because the design of the site wouldn't let the reviewer do so.

Big Rigs scores an 8 out of 100 on Metacritic, with the only scores higher than 0 being 10, which were given by websites that did not have a 0 score. This gave Big Rigs the lowest score of any game on Metacritic, on all platforms. Meanwhile, GameRankings has an average score of 3.83% making it number one on All-Time Worst.

Alex Navarro of GameSpot declared that Big Rigs is "as bad as your mind will allow you to comprehend. Later in his review, Navarro added, "Please do not play this game. We cannot stress this enough." In the Halloween special Frightfully Bad Games video, Navarro stated, "This game received the lowest score in the history of GameSpot, a 1.0. And by lowest, I mean it can't go any lower. We don't hand out zeros, but maybe we should have for Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing." In GameSpot's "Best and Worst of 2004" awards, Big Rigs was given the "Flat-out Worst Game" award, despite the fact that the game was actually released in 2003. They said that they would use the "YOU'RE WINNER !" trophy as a symbol for the 'Flat-Out Worst Game' award from then on, but by 2005 a more generic logo was used.
Bah, Big Rigs is so bad, I heard about it a few years ago and had to play it myself, I found a copy in a used games store, bought it for 2 reais (that's our currency, equivalent to approximately 1 american dollar). "Over the road racing." Yeah, no kidding! You go both over and under the road, as well as through it. Oh, and I love how you can achieve light speed by going backwards in circles with your truck.

If I am not mistaken, the game's released version was 0.8 or 0.9, that means they released an unfinished game, it wasn't even out of beta and they were already trying to sell the darn thing; then they released the "complete" version as a patch, oh I'm sure that works.

Worst game ever? Perhaps. It's definetely the most non-functional and uninteresting game I have ever seen, but I'm sure there is something worse out there... lurking in the shadows...

If you think that was a terrible game, try playing The Rocketeer for NES or SNES.

Rogue Warrior.

Bug ridden on all platforms, and the gameplay can't even make up its mind if it's stealth based or action based as the mechanics are so screwed up. Its pretty much the lowest rated game on MetaCritic. It doesn't even have an aggregated rating above 30, pretty much every review site gave it a 40 or lower on a 100 scale.

Basically, no matter what system you play, this game is not worth getting, even on sale or from the bargin bin.

I am afraid I'm going to have to contradict you there, the lowest scored game on MetaCritic is, you guessed it, Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing which recieved an 8/100. This gave Big Rigs the lowest score of any game on Metacritic, on all platforms.

Here's the reception the game got, I meant to post this in the OP.

Okay, I just found some reviews for this game on Amazon. I particularly wanted to see the 5-star reviews. I almost cried while reading these 3 ones.
Hidden/Spoiler:
This is the most important game ever made. It raises questions that few others do, such as "aren't we all just racing against ourselves anyway?" and "what would the world be like without police?" and "Wouldn't it be wonderful to not have the laws of physics?" It also takes on very important metaphysical questions with a clarity reminiscent of Descartes: What can I actually know about the world around me? Can I really trust what my eyes are seeing?

For example the use of bridges in the game; are they really there or are they an illusion? If I choose one of the five available trucks will it work or is it only the illusion of a truck? There is so much hidden depth to this game that many, many reviewers are totally missing when they blindly criticize its meager graphics, dysfunctional AI, and total lack of audio. These are merely surface issues. The heart and soul of the game is the valuable critique it offers of reality.

If you want to expand your mind and wisdom, buy this game. It will broaden your horizons and teach you to view the world in profound new ways.
This is one of the better science fiction racing games that have ever been released. Even though there are a few flaws, this game still deserves 5 stars because it is so innovative and nothing like it has come out since. You will start by being able to choose between several different disguise vehicles that look like ordinary trucks so that your secret identity, an advanced alien scouting vehicle, will be concealed. You have some very cool alien space powers during game play that might make the game a little too easy for experienced gamers, especially since most of the powers activate automatically, allowing you to decimate your opponents in the races. For example, your freeze ray will automatically stop your opponent in his tracks at the beginning of the race and he will not be able to move so you can complete the race at your leisure. The cops in the game are also no match for the advanced weaponry of your vehicle and any cop cars are disintegrated with your invisible laser beam before they even come into sight. Unfortunately this weapon doesn't seem to differentiate between cops and any other car because you never actually come across any other vehicles. Some other super cool powers you have is to automatically phase through any solid objects in the game, which is a clever idea by the developers to let you avoid that terrible frustration that comes with crashing. Your super space vehicle can also spin in place almost as fast as a tornado, stop instantly, scale vertical cliffs, and enter special warp zones at the edge of each track. These powers are easy to use and will make you feel very powerful during each race. It isn't that challenging of a game but don't let that stop you from feeling full of pride when you win the race and get that famous "You're winner!" I'll never forget that first time I got that message because it made for one of the happiest days of my life. I definitely recommend this game!
When I first playet this game, I was astonished by its Outstanding Visual effects, Breath taking graphics (which greatly surpasses Doom 3's), and its 7.1 surround sound music and sound effects. When I am playing this game, I press my foot against the pillow on the floor like the accelerator, because it looks very realistic. While playing Big Rigs, I can never lose, It makes me cry tears of joy to see the You're Winner screen. In this way, Big Rigs boosted my confindence. I would reccomend Big Rigs to every type of gamer. I bet the developers worked their best to make such a terrific game.
The thing with most games is there is usually something good to say about it. For example I have heard that STO's space combat is alot of fun but that the ground combat itsn't. There's usually always some Pros and Cons. With Big Rigs the entire game is one big Con and there are absolutely no Pros. That's really a different kind of awful, a unique kind.

That's not true, Big Rigs teaches us the importance of actually putting effort in your work, or better yet, how to not screw up when making a game...

Yes, but I was talking about Pros and Cons in the actual gameplay not the lessons it teaches us.
