Very frustrating collision problems

Ok I am working on a very large character model and I cant seem to figure out whats going on, I tried using the scale Collisionroot/torso/head ODF commands but the collision for my character is only a small stick between its legs... its driving me mad and over the edge... is there anything I can do to fix this??!!!

Can I use primitives to fix this or what?
