Valhalla 1.2

Valhalla Beta Map: http://starwarsbattlefront.filefront.co ... lla;114799

It got a 9.5 on SWBFF, and generally positive comments.

Valhalla 1.0 Unreleased, I forgot to munge before I sent it off the SWBFF

Valhalla 1.1: http://starwarsbattlefront.filefront.co ... lla;115023

Only got a 3.8, because I packed it wrong, and somehow the death zone under the water munged funnily and appeared above.

So, anyway, besides the two issues mentioned above, did anyone that played the map have any reasons for the drop? And any suggestions for 1.2?

I'll fix the death zone, and put it together properly. Anything else? Keep in mind this isn't a huge undertaking. I'll have the repairs done by this weekend, more or less.

Word of advice, ignore ratings on SWBFFiles, at least when you have below ten of them or so (same goes for any other place, really). Note that the 9.5 comes from only two ratings, and the 3.8 from only four. The high rating was probably from a couple of kids obsessed with anything Halo, while the low rating was probably from a few people who take personal offense to the minor inconvenience of fixing the packing issue. I haven't tried the map myself, but I think you'll be good to go if you just take the advice Mav gave in his reviews. In terms of visuals, the blocky terrain walls and jagged ground near the stream need to be improved, but I like the look you seem to be aiming for.

By this you mean what exactly...?

And I wasn't taking the ratings to heart...for those reasons, but it is a big drop...

In the third screenshot, some of the terrain near the stream appears a little blocky. It would look a lot better if you smoothed it out.

It must just be the screenshot angle...I don't think it is....I've run the blend tool all over the water, for that purpose...

I thought you needed screenshots to post in the WIP thread.

Anyway, to me it looks rather too open. I haven't played the Halo level, but for BF2 I would recommend adding more props to make it a bit more closed in and interesting.

I couldn't take any in game, although Mav did on SWBFFiles.

Will you have halo sides? or just swbf2 sides?

:funny2: No...but I'm hoping to add them in the future...I'm no where near that experienced, although maybe I can get some of Culvar's stuff when he finishes...

How is progress going on this update? The map itself is a little bland BTW.

ermmm...ratings on filefront are actually a good indicator. Anything below 5 means it needs work. You obviously just need to patch it up! That's not a bad thing!

but REMEMBER! Making an exact duplicate of a halo map won't translate well into battlefront gameplay mechanics. For one thing, clones can't jump like 15 feet straight up. I suggest you add your own flavour to the map like say adding a hidden bunker that is an important strategic position, or maybe throwing in some a.i. ambush to keep the player on their toes. Just saying! And don't ever say this is outside your experience! Gametoast offers tons of tutorials!

I know, lets say its "inspired" by Valhalla.

Ambush, good idea. I mean its a bit beyond me to add Halo sides to a quick update. I will add them to a later map.

My computer had issues, so not much. I was busy for a week, then my computer wouldn't let me in to Windows. But its fixed.

And, have you played the map, or are you saying that from the screenshots? jw

If the screenshots look bland enough to discourage one from even downloading the map, well.... If the map isn't as bland as the screenshots suggest, it may be a good idea to take pictures of the less bland parts to show it off.

Good point...but that's not what I meant...I don't think they're that bland, I just wanted to know if he had actually played the map.

Oh, trust me, they are that bland. It would be a very good idea to add height variation and more props, as well as making the map somewhat smaller.

I like the size that it is. I'll try the other two, though.

EDIT: I've actually decided to do a pretty big revamp, so mods, you can lock this, and everyone else, keep a look out for a "Varn" WIP soon.
