outdated>Ok so I'm making a map called Secret Hidden Outpost. There is a base on the icy world of Aven Ven. I have the map at about 85-90% done but want opinions to change some things. Currently there is 8 command posts, one bunker on a hill, a landing site, a defensive hill, two command posts on the plains, one trenched area near the entrance to a tunnel system, one wall outpost and a base inside the tunnels. This is only set as a conquest map currently.

I am thinking of adding rebel troopers like the ones on the tantive IV, but with slightly different skins. (his personal guards) The story would be that a Jedi Knight who has his own loyal men loads his personal frigate with supplies and leaves a week or so before order 66 to a remote, mainly uncharted planet called Aven Ven. He sets up a base but later the Imperials find out about the base and the jedi knight. They attack in order to remove this jedi.

Right now it has the normal troops (but snow) on Gcw and the Clone Wars. The known bugs are no sound for the at-st and for the imp speeder but all else is well. The imp, and rep right now are the ones with the base and cis and alliance are attacking. All sides have tanks and speeders.<outdated

tell me what you think i should add/change :D

here are all the pictures links: http://s603.photobucket.com/albums/tt114/RogueCruiser/

All units have names! Terrain is not bright anymore! This map is finished. The only problems are the at-st, imp speederbike, and chaingun (on the rebel side) have no sound. But I'll probably leave it as is.

"Secret Hidden Outpost" is wordy and repetitive. Just "Secret Outpost" or "Hidden Outpost" would suffice.

hm. for a first map it looks fine, with the default yavin sky and settings that should be changed but otherwise nice work :)

I don't know how to change it though, I figured it was bad also<to eggman's post

Try adding some custom clone legions. Like for instance I bet you could put in the Galactic Marines.

The snow is kinda weird, it might be the lighting or something related to the yavin sky, though.

Good for a first map, I'm glad you didn't go for a common planet like Tatooine or Geonosis. :thumbs:

secret hidden outpost? isn't that entirely a contradicting statement? lol, either secret or hidden will do, because they mean the same thing.

I started typing out an explanation, then realized there's already a thread about it. :P Here's a link: http://www.gametoast.com/forums/viewtop ... 27&t=13231

If you need a bit more help on using the localization tool, there are links to some other threads about it in the Everything You Need thread.

Stop suggesting this to beginners (not to mention everyone else).
Just because your obsessed with clone legions doesn't mean everyone is and its a whole lot more complicated stuff for a beginner to do that makes almost no difference.

@RogueCruiser
Diet Dr. Pepper good for a first map (heaps better than mine :P )
Map suggestions -
Darken terrain (color in ZeroEditor).
Perhaps reskin the buildings a little.
As people said, try changing the sky. There may be something on it in getting started doc, I honestly can;'t remember.

I figured I'd be asked to change the sky so i planned to, also, the terrain was bright (without objects its almost blinding)

I was thinking of reskining the walls and the barriers, perhaps the laser turrets. Like I said earlier, I will probably add the trooper from the tantive 4, (like the bodyguards of the jedi in the force unleashed) and change it to a rebel type team later(for the jedi's personal guard). <all in due time (when i get better at it)

To go with the "story", The base will be his and will defend it against imps in gcw. In clone wars it may stay as cis att, and rep def.

You're on the right track by considering reskins for the walls and other props. It'll give the map a more consistent feel.

Oh and one thing, I looked at tutorials etc. but I still can figure out how to just change the sky.

um im going to assume that was supposed to be *can't figure out. basically what you do in a nut shell is find this line in your worlds .sky file (located in data_&&&/worlds/&&&/world1)

Code: Select all

Texture("sky_yav2");
	Angle(-90.000000);
	Ambient(255.000000, 255.000000, 255.000000);
	Filter(1);
	Threshold(150);
	Intensity(50);

	Softness(1);
	SoftnessParam(60);

	DomeModel()
	{
		Geometry("sky_yav2");
replace sky_yav2 with the name of another world's sky texture and geometry name. Of course you have to copy those files out of that worlds world1 folder to your world1 folder (that sounds confusing lol) this is the simplest way to change your sky to another sky, if you know how to reskin things it may even be easier to just edit the sky_yav2.tga in GIMP. And this maps not bad its much better than most first maps like sky mentioned, we all just gotta learn things at one point or another :)
@about the clone legions-for a first map i would not suggest making custom clone legions as A) theyre overused and B) could be a little difficult for a first map. Using default sides would be good for now.

Disagree. I used to want custom clone legions on every map, but I'm really tired of them. Give me the 501st, or maybe the Ep II clones.

i agree i think just a plain white ep3 or ep2 trooper goes fine with nearly any map

Nice map. Id say just use the default sides unless you want a certain camo or want to edit the weapons to make the battle more/less intense. and yeah, tone down the snow a little, and give it like a night sky, or stormy sky, that would give a nice atmosphere. and yes, reskinning the buildings, or just making then lighter, would significantly make it cooler. :thumbs: :thumbs: :thumbs:

QFT like i said the custom legions are really being overused, and its not a good idea if its a first map.

That and to be brutally honest a LOT of custom legions get ruined with overpowered custom weapons and other things that unbalance gameplay. I've deleted many a map that I thought would be fun because the sides were awful.
