WIP: Pimped Stormtrooper!

Post by YouJediJunkie »

I find your lack of accuracy disturbing... :vader2:

OK, here's the thing; I was never happy with the SWBF graphics and have always thought they have been pretty poor compared to other Star Wars games from the same years (Jedi Academy, Republic Commando, you name it), so I decided to give a shot at editting my favourite kind of trooper in Star Wars - the Imperial stormtrooper!

Look sir, mods! :stormie:

DarthD.U.C.K. sent me the Stormtrooper model so I could give a shot at editting it. I've been tweaking the model, added details etc. and made new UVs/textures. It will be unmirrored and pretty accurate, depending on how good I can get it with my hobby skills.

The texture work is far from done yet (so I guess you shouldn't wait for a release any time soon), but here's a little sneak peak for you. I know it looks a bit like the JKA stormtrooper, but this is no port; It is indeed the SWBF trooper (with my tweakings) and it is indeed my texture work. I will post more pics later, don't you worry! :P

Cheers! And may the pork be with you!

good idea. i have to say though that one can "pimp" the stormtrooper by reskinning to a certain point (which i did but never released). but nevertheless i am so looking forward to you finishing this project. finally someone takes on a stormtrooper model.
this is just what i always thought, too. one of the most important units in the star wars universe has to be movie-like, period.
so good on you and thanks for your efforts!

Oi Keller, thanks! :music:

Here's another pic. I feel that it would be best with new animations so it looks more stiff and realistic, I don't think it would look any good with those Quasimodo animations that Pandemic made...

Most epic model do-over I have ever seen. You already know my thoughts on this, but yeah I can't wait for it to come out.

May the force be with you.. :vader2:

Nice, but you might wanna move the eyepieces back inside just a little bit, it looks a little of with them out that far.

I don't think I can draw them back anymore, they would just "melt" into the helmet. But I'll look into it! :cpu:

Very nice work, really. You should work some more on the helmet for me.

Something about the helmet doesn't look right at all, the eye area is far too bulged out, you need to study the helmet a lil more to get it right. The reason why they didn't put this kind of detail into the models is to make the game run smoother and all that minor detail isn't noticed by the average person.

If detail isn't noticed by the average person, either nobody here is average, or this website doesn't exist. But, back on topic, I agree with him on the eye area, as I posted earlier.

Are you really telling me you pay attention to the eyepieces of a stormtrooper when you're running around shooting them? Looking up close at a model in screenshots or in XSI is completely different and those are not things you design a practical model for.

There's nothing wrong, of course, with upping the detail if you want, but as far as the most practical choice for a game with a lot of units running around at once, what Pandemic did was probably best.

you arent paying attention to a certain eyepiece of a certain stormtrooper, but it makes a difference if you are playing in an environment which is the one the one pandemic created for PCs 4-5 years ago with appropriate detail or if you play in a "pimped one" which battleforn can handle on actual PCs

I agree, excessive detail is really only noticable in still screens or if you just like to stop and stare at everything ingame in which case you must not be doing much to help your team to begin with. Pandemic did a fine job of creating optimal detail with low-poly geometry.

That is a good point, and I agree that yes it might be appropriate to have a higher-quality model for more detailed maps. However, I have yet to see, really, any newly-modeled map that surpasses even the stock maps in detail, much less one that is significantly greater.

Edit: None of this is to say that the original poster should not be doing what he is doing. Working off of prefabricated materials to make them better is a great way to learn and practice your modeling, and certainly no one is going to begrudge the use of a different model. This is only to address more recent posts.
